Rockstar has published no number. Everyone else has
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map? What's Confirmed and What's Estimated
7 min read · Source: Rockstar's published material, with reporting from timesaver.gg, CBR, Insider Gaming and PC Gamer · Updated August 24, 2026

Rockstar has never published a size for the GTA 6 map. Not a square mileage, not a comparison to GTA 5, not a scale bar on anything it has released. Every number you have seen is somebody's estimate, and the good ones say so.
Here is what the studio has actually confirmed, what the two main estimates are, who produced them, and why they do not agree with each other.
Six regions, one state, and why calling GTA 6 a Vice City game misses most of the map.

The setting is the state of Leonida, not the city of Vice City. That distinction is the studio's own, and it made it by publishing a postcard for each region rather than a single city map.
Six regions have been named in official material: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Dense city, island chain, wetland, coastal town, inland Leonida and protected wilderness.
That is the whole of it. No map, no scale, no region count beyond those six, and no statement about how they connect or how far apart they are.
Why there is no official number
This is not an oversight, and it is not Rockstar being coy about something bad. The studio has not published a square-mileage figure for GTA 6 the way it did not publish one for GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 either. Map area is a number that marketing departments generally avoid, because it invites a comparison the game then has to win.
It also measures the wrong thing. A map's size tells you nothing about how much of it is worth visiting, and the series' own history is the argument: San Andreas in 2004 was larger than GTA IV's Liberty City in 2008, and almost nobody would claim it was the denser world.

The community mapping estimate: 118 to 132 square miles
The most widely cited figure comes from community mapping projects that reconstruct the map by measuring landmarks across trailers and official screenshots and extrapolating. As reported by timesaver.gg on August 13, 2026, those projects put Leonida at roughly 118 to 132 square miles of playable area, which is about 306 to 342 square kilometres.
The comparison that gives it meaning is GTA 5, commonly measured at around 49 square miles in total (about 127 square kilometres), of which roughly 31 square miles is land. Set 118 to 132 against 49 and you get the multiplier that circulates everywhere: about 2.4 to 2.7 times the size of GTA 5.
Note the unit. These are square miles, not square kilometres, and the two get swapped constantly in coverage of this topic. In square kilometres the same estimate reads as 306 to 342 against 127, which is the same ratio described in numbers roughly two and a half times larger.
No named group is behind the figure. The reporting attributes it to community mapping projects in the plural, without identifying one, and we are not going to invent a name for it.
The flyover estimate: two to two and a half times GTA 5
There is a second estimate, arrived at a completely different way. On August 18, 2026, one of the leaked CyberLeek clips showed Jason flying a plane across Vice City and out over the state. Reporting on that clip, by Insider Gaming and PC Gamer, timed the flight and worked back to an area, landing at roughly two to two and a half times the size of GTA 5's map.
That figure is the one this site has published until now, and it comes with two large caveats we have never dropped: it is derived from flight time rather than measurement, and it comes from an unfinished build that is not the shipping game.
Why the estimates do not agree
Figures between 110 and 200 square kilometres are all in circulation, which is a range wide enough to be useless if you do not know what each one is counting.
Most of the spread is definitional. Land area and playable area are different numbers, and a state built around an island chain and a wetland has a lot of water that is traversable but is not land. GTA 5 shows the same problem in miniature: about 49 square miles including water, about 31 without, and a commonly quoted 75.84 square kilometres that sits between the two depending on what the person measuring decided to include.
The rest is method. Measuring a landmark in a trailer frame and scaling up assumes you have identified the landmark and the focal length correctly. Timing a flight assumes you know the aircraft's speed in a build nobody outside the leak has run. Neither is unreasonable; neither is measurement.
The headline problem
On April 2, 2026, CBR published a piece headlined "GTA 6's Map Is Officially 2.5 Times Bigger Than GTA 5".
The article's own text says: "Going off community mapping efforts, the world of Grand Theft Auto VI looks to be 2.5 times larger than the map of GTA 5." There is no Rockstar figure anywhere in it, because there is no Rockstar figure anywhere. Readers said so in the comments.
We are naming it because it is the clearest available example of the pattern, not because CBR is unusual in it. The body was accurate and properly hedged. The word that was not earned was in the headline, which is the part most people read and the only part that gets quoted onward.
What would actually settle it
Two things, in order. The Extended Look on August 27, 2026 is the first substantial new footage since Trailer 2, and map scale is one of the questions a presentation of that name exists to address. It may show enough to narrow the range. It is unlikely to produce a number, because Rockstar producing a number would be a change in fifteen years of practice.
The other is launch, on November 19, 2026. Within days of release the map will be measured properly by people playing it, and every estimate on this page will be replaced by a figure with a method anyone can repeat.
Until one of those happens, the honest answer to how big the GTA 6 map is remains: nobody outside Rockstar knows, the best estimates put it at roughly two and a half times GTA 5, and anyone telling you otherwise is quoting an estimate without saying so.
